Taking Good Care of Children’s Feet

Good foot health is important, particularly for children, as their feet are still developing and are foundational to their overall physical health. Children’s feet grow rapidly, and proper development is essential to prevent long-term issues. Poor foot health in childhood can lead to problems such as flat feet, misaligned bones, or even postural issues affecting the knees, hips, and spine. Ensuring good foot health involves several key practices. Children should wear properly fitted shoes that provide adequate support. Regularly checking shoe size is important as kids outgrow shoes quickly. Encourage children to walk barefoot when safe, as this can strengthen their foot muscles. Hygiene is equally important, as keeping feet clean and dry prevents fungal infections. Observing children’s walking patterns and foot structure can help identify issues early. For any concerns about your child's foot health, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for professional advice and treatment.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Cascade Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Tending to Bunions

Bunions are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of the big toe, causing the toe to deviate towards the other toes. They appear as swollen, protruding lumps on the side of the foot and can be red and tender. The condition can cause significant discomfort, including pain, swelling, and restricted movement of the big toe. Bunions often develop due to inherited foot structure, wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, arthritis, or excessive stress on the feet. High heels and pointed shoes are common culprits in exacerbating bunions. Symptoms typically include pain, especially while walking, and inflammation surrounding the affected joint. Treatment for bunions ranges from conservative measures to surgery. Wearing wider shoes, using bunion pads, and taking anti-inflammatory medications can help to alleviate symptoms. Orthotic devices may help correct foot alignment. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to realign the bone and relieve pain. Untreated bunions can lead to complications such as bursitis or hammertoes. If you have a bunion that is causing you discomfort, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for treatment.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact one of our podiatrists of Cascade Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

In the construction industry, wearing the right shoes is not just a matter of comfort. It is an important safety consideration that can make a significant difference in preventing injuries and ensuring productivity. Construction workers are exposed to various hazards on the job, including heavy objects, sharp materials, slippery surfaces, and electrical equipment, all of which pose risks to foot safety. Wearing sturdy, supportive footwear with reinforced toe caps and slip-resistant soles can provide essential protection against these dangers. Additionally, wearing proper footwear can help prevent common foot ailments such as plantar fasciitis, foot fatigue, and musculoskeletal injuries, allowing workers to stay comfortable and focused throughout the workday. Investing in high-quality work boots that meet safety standards and fit well is essential for every construction worker, as it not only promotes personal well-being but also enhances overall job performance and efficiency. By prioritizing the importance of wearing the right shoes, construction workers can mitigate risks and reduce accidents. Suffering from a foot injury during the workday may happen as a result of wearing the wrong type of shoes. If this has happened to you, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat foot conditions and guide you on choosing the right work shoes.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Foot Swelling

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects joints, frequently targeting the feet and ankles. Common symptoms include swelling, pain, and inflammation in the affected joints. In RA, the immune system mistakenly attacks the joint lining, leading to chronic inflammation that can damage the joints and surrounding tissues over time. As a result, the foot and ankle joints often become swollen and painful, which can make walking and standing uncomfortable or even debilitating. The swelling is often symmetrical, meaning it typically affects the same joints on both sides of the body simultaneously. Treatment may include medication to reduce inflammation and slow disease progression. Targeted stretching to maintain joint function and orthotics to support the joints and alleviate pressure are other possible measures. Regular visits to a podiatrist, or foot doctor, are important for those with RA to monitor their foot health. If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and the associated swelling in the feet and ankles, it is suggested you make an appointment with a podiatrist today.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Cascade Foot Clinic. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.
